A look at Everton’s summer dealings so far, with more activity anticipated during the remaining nine days of the transfer window
What shape will David Moyes’ Everton squad be in once the transfer window shuts next week? Moyes, alongside most others at the club, continues to hold out hope of securing a right-back. Additional signings may still materialise should the Friedkin Group’s aim of pushing for European qualification come to fruition. Some of this could hinge on player departures, and with Carlos Alcaraz, Tim Iroegbunam, Nathan Patterson and Beto all in the final 12 months of their deals, the club are expected to be busy in the closing stages of the window.
The loan market merits attention too. Adam Aznou was absent from Saturday’s matchday squad despite some encouraging pre-season showings, and should Moyes be reluctant to give him opportunities, a temporary stint elsewhere for match practice would make sense.
Academy prospects Braiden Graham and Jack Patterson are drawing suitors and could form part of a wave of Under-21 players permitted to sample senior football through loans.
Regarding completed business, Brennan Johnson’s capture represented the fifth acquisition of the summer to bolster the senior squad. Essentially a swap arrangement saw Dwight McNeil go in the opposite direction, with both making their bows against their former employers on Saturday.
Johnson arrived after the club had already secured Christian Norgaard from Arsenal for £7million and Hayden Hackney from Middlesbrough for an initial £18million as new faces in the first-team pool. Merlin Rohl (£18million from Freiburg) and Tyrique George (£16.5million from Chelsea) have now become permanent Everton players after spending last season on loan before triggering permanent moves.
In the youth setup, Everton have strengthened their U18 side by recruiting young forward Kai Hutchison from Dundee, left-back Tom McDermott from Chelsea and midfielder Arthur Barratt, also from Chelsea.
