Former Arsenal favourite Alan Smith has labelled Christian Norgaard as an astute acquisition for Everton, believing the Danish international can provide tactical intelligence in the middle of the park.
Smith, who achieved legendary status at the Emirates Stadium during his playing days, considers the midfielder an inspired piece of business for the Toffees, despite his underwhelming stint in north London.
Norgaard arrived at Goodison Park on August 5, penning a two-year deal after a fee of around £7million was agreed. The 32-year-old had previously skippered Brentford before his Emirates switch last summer, amassing over 200 Premier League outings during his time in England.
At Arsenal, the Denmark man managed just 20 appearances under Mikel Arteta, with only 11 of those being from the first whistle, as he served primarily as cover while the Gunners secured the domestic title.
Smith, who claimed two league titles alongside FA Cup, League Cup and European Cup-Winners’ Cup glory during his career, notching 115 goals across 351 matches, is confident Norgaard will prove crucial for David Moyes’ side.
Speaking to the ECHO through BestBettingSites.co.uk, the 63-year-old stated he found it surprising Norgaard received limited opportunities under Arteta. He described the capture as a typical Moyes signing, securing a dependable professional with strong dressing-room presence. Smith highlighted the midfielder’s tactical awareness and experience as key attributes, believing Norgaard can establish high standards and organise play effectively. He labelled it a shrewd acquisition that could reignite the player’s career on Merseyside.
Norgaard was absent from Everton’s final three pre-season matches following his arrival but featured in Saturday’s 1-1 stalemate with Lille.
Upon completing his move, the experienced campaigner expressed his delight at joining, stating he required a fresh challenge and greater involvement in matches. He revealed conversations with Moyes and club officials about the project’s ambitions captured his imagination. Reflecting on his previous encounters with Everton as an opponent, he recalled the remarkable atmosphere and passionate support, expressing eagerness to experience Goodison as a home player. He emphasised the honour of representing the club and his commitment to honouring the supporters’ passion.
Norgaard noted his memory of Goodison’s electric environment during past visits, describing how the ground literally trembled. He admitted surprise at maintaining that intimacy when the club moved to their new stadium, finding the atmosphere equally impressive.
Everton begin their Premier League season at home against Crystal Palace on Saturday at 3pm.
