FORMER EVERTON STAR TONY COTTEE HAS ACKNOWLEDGED THE DISAPPOINTMENT FELT BY THE CLUB’S SUPPORTERS AS DAVID MOYES ATTEMPTS TO REASSEMBLE HIS SQUAD
Tony Cottee is confident Everton’s following will remain patient with David Moyes during his rebuilding project, though he concedes the fanbase’s irritation is understandable following last term’s late-season collapse.
Moyes, who guided the Toffees to nine top-eight league finishes during his initial tenure at Goodison Park, including a club-record fourth-place Premier League finish, saw his side sitting just three points shy of Champions League qualification after their 3-0 triumph over Chelsea on March 21.
Yet a winless run in their final seven fixtures resulted in them sliding to 13th in the standings for the consecutive campaign. In what marked his first official media engagement since pre-season commenced, speaking to Sky Sports journalist Vinny O’Connor, the Scottish manager conceded his side still require substantial recruitment activity, though chief executive Angus Kinnear later informed BBC Radio Merseyside’s Giulia Bould that he believed the squad was in a positive condition.
Cottee, who struck 99 goals across 241 matches for the club following his then-record £2.2million arrival from West Ham United in August 1988, acknowledges that supporter groups generally display reduced tolerance in contemporary football. However, he emphasises that the Toffees’ extended absence from silverware significantly contributes to their current disgruntlement.
The 61-year-old informed the ECHO that supporters naturally grow impatient, noting how modern expectations demand achievement. He explained that putting himself in an Evertonian’s position reveals the core issue: their last trophy arrived in 1995, meaning three decades have passed. This represents the longest trophy-less period in the club’s complete existence, which he identifies as the root of supporter discontent.
He clarified this frustration does not equate to doubting Moyes’ suitability for the role. Rather, supporters simply yearn for success, European qualification, and cup final appearances. The key lies in taking that next stride forward. Cottee pointed to Moyes’ previous accomplishments at Everton and subsequently at West Ham, where he secured the Conference League, as evidence that while immediate triumph is unrealistic, methodical progression yields results. The manager must identify the missing components and secure appropriate personnel in pivotal roles before Everton can flourish. Securing a trophy or reaching Europe would restore equilibrium among the faithful.
Cottee, appearing courtesy of Football Betting, stressed he comprehends this exasperation profoundly. Having departed the club only months before that season concluded, he recognises how prolonged the wait has become. Everton simply require a victory. The current situation fails to meet the expectations associated with the club and the standards established by previous generations of players and squads. Supporters aged 35 or below have witnessed nothing significant in their lifetimes.
He drew comparisons with West Ham’s experience of 43 years without a trophy, noting his fortune in witnessing the previous success but highlighting supporters approaching their fifties who had never seen their club triumph. Everton face a similar trajectory, and the longer this persists, the more challenging recovery becomes. He referenced Manchester United’s extended league title drought before their first Premier League crown and Liverpool’s 30-year wait for league success.
Cottee believes supporters recognise what Moyes has contributed during both his appointments. Unless the campaign commences catastrophically, he anticipates the manager will receive adequate time to work. Hopefully Everton can enjoy a productive season, having come close previously. They must transform their new stadium into an impregnable stronghold and rediscover home winning form, enabling them to mount a serious challenge once more.
